'Title for the tower' competition launched

The Churches Conservation Trust today launches a competition to name the new tower tours at St Peter's Church, Sandwich, which are set to open up a new view of the 'most complete medieval town in England' to the public.

Work at St Peter’s Church, Sandwich has been ongoing since the beginning of the year in a project to transform one of the best known landmarks in the town. The work at the Grade I listed church will see the construction of a staircase inside the tower, which will allow visitors to enjoy fantastic views over the town.

The exciting development will secure the sustainable future of this unique building, which already welcomes thousands of visitors per year. The new visitor experience will also help to tell the fascinating stories of the church, discover its unique history and allow visitors to marvel at the spectacular views.

The CCT now needs help in naming the tower tours and is today launching the ‘Title for the Tower’ competition.

Peter Aiers, Director of The Churches Conservation Trust in the South East, said: ‘We’re really excited that work is progressing on our project at St Peter’s Church. We think that the new tower access for visitors will really put the church on the map, but we need the help of local people in coming up with a memorable name for the tower tours– one that really captures the essence of the experience!’

The name should be short, snappy and fun, but also be descriptive of the tower tour experience. The closing date for the competition is Friday 8th April 2016 and the winning name will be used on all marketing materials, including leaflets, website and banners. The winner will receive a VIP guided tour of the church and tower and also a hamper full of Kentish food and drink goodies! Entries can be sent to [email protected] or tweeted to @SandwichStPeter.

The tower tours and new visitor experience is due to be opened for visitors from early July 2016. The church is open as usual during this period.
