Pop-Up Opera: Il Matrimonio Segreto - Leigh Delamere
The light-hearted opera, Il Matrimonio Segreto by Cimarosa, performed in the beautiful surroundings of St Margaret of Antioch
Pop-Up Opera hosts a live performance of Il Matrimonio Segreto (The Secret Marriage) by Domenico Cimarosa in beautiful St Margaret's Church in north Wiltshire.
This 18th-century Italian comic opera by Domenico Cimarosa holds hints of Mozart's influence in the score. Filled with comic intrigues and confusions, the story is about following your heart, and makes a perfect summer opera filled with Pop-up Opera's humour, sparkle and fun.
First performed in Vienna for Emperor Leopoldo II in 1792, its premiere was the occasion of the longest encore in operatic history: Leopold II was so delighted that he ordered supper served to the company and the entire opera repeated immediately after!
The story is based on a play, The Clandestine Marriage, by David Garrick and in 1999 was made into a film starring Nigel Hawthorne and Joan Collins.
Tickets include a glass of wine during the interval. The performance begins at 7.30pm and, weather permitting, you can picnic at Leigh Delamere House from 5.30pm.
