A chancel in the wetlands
All Saints' Church is now just a chancel, the remains of a medieval church near the source of the Thames that was abandoned to its wetland surroundings in the nineteenth-century when the rest of the church was removed to a drier and more convenient site.
The arches, windows and other features date from the thirteenth and fifteenth-centuries and the east gable of the old nave was left to protect the chancel arch. There are seventeenth-century texts painted on the walls and framed in designs of clouds and scrolls.
Park in the Waterhey public car park just after the bridge across the Thames. Continue on foot back cross the bridge and take the first right. Continue approx 100m down this road and then follow sign marked "Chancel" down dirt track and through two cattlegates. Church is through fields on your right.
Access from road via dirt track through often waterlogged fields with cattle-gate and live stock. However with a suitable 4x4, vehicular access is possible to the chancel door, and the entrance has no steps.
