Securing the future of St. Swithun's

On Saturday 28 September CCT staff and members of the Friends of St. Swithun's in Worcester met in the city centre church for a community fun day with a purpose.

St. Swithun’s is a stunning Georgian church - complete with box pews, a highly decorative triple decker pulpit and an extraordinary 1795 Grays organ – that has a significant problem to solve: how to develop new uses and create the investment needed to give this fantastic city centre building a sustainable future at the heart of its community.

To tackle this challenge CCT and the church’s friends group are working in partnership on a multi-year project to develop a long-term plan for the church and to secure future funding.

A vital step of the process is consultation with the local community and September’s fun day was an opportunity to bring local people together to gauge and document their ideas and opinions on how the church could be used. The day was enjoyed by over 400 people who took part in activities including stone-carving, music-making, face-painting and bell-ringing, as well as leaving us with their ideas for the future. Once the consultation stage is complete next steps will be to draw up an options appraisal and church plan ahead of a fundraising campaign. There will be a lot more news along the way so watch this space!
