A scenic circular walk starting at St Mary’s in Akenham visiting St Peter’s in Claydon, both churches are medieval but where St Mary’s interior is simple but beautiful, St Peter’s is stunning, full of vibrant stain glass.


The Suffolk Walking Festival is one of the largest and longest running walking festivals in the country.   Celebrating Suffolk’s natural and built heritage in every part of the county.  In May 2019, the previous festival walkers collectively left approximately 28 million footsteps across the county!

Starting at St Mary’s in Akenham which has the solitary grave of a two year old boy, who died in 1878, which helped to alter the Burial Laws of England. The walk is via St Peter’s in Claydon, both churches are medieval but where St Mary’s interior is simple but beautiful, St Peter’s is stunning, full of vibrant stain glass and extravagant carvings and is the handiwork of Rev George Drury in the 19th Century, a supporter of the Catholic Revival.

Parking is available in the field opposite St Mary's from Thurleston Lane via the farm track.  Look out for signs and pot holes. Please note that there are no toilet facilities.
