The critically acclaimed Oxfordshire Early Music Trio Musical Banquet are making an eagerly anticipated first visit to St Bartholomew's Church, Lower Basildon, at 3.30pm on Sunday 13th May 2018 and performing an afternoon tea recital, raising funds for the Churches Conservation Trust. Step back in time 400 years to hear the group serve up a delectable menu of musical delicacies including vocal and instrumental works from some of the finest English and European composers, interspersed with colourful period anecdotes.

Situated a few miles south of Wallingford, shaded by fine trees and near a beautiful stretch of the river Thames, St Bartholomew's Church dates back to the late C13 and the ornate C15 roof timbers speak of a time when parishioners grew rich from the local wool and corn trade. A Grade I listed building the church is now in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust. Amongst its many notable features are a 14th-century chest tomb and 15th-century font whilst in the churchyard stands a memorial to Jethro Tull, the 18th-century agriculturalist and father of modern farming, the exact whereabouts of his grave being unknown.

This historic building provides a fitting backdrop for an unusual and highly entertaining opportunity to experience works performed on period instruments combined with Countertenor voice much as the 17th and 18th century audience might have heard them. With plenty of surprises along the way, the concert will be presented in the group's characteristically innovative, energetic and imaginative style and the special 'afternoon tea ‘menu' includes some sweet treats from one of England's finest composers, Henry Purcell and a tribute to the Scots poet and songwriter Robert Burns. A tempting indulgence for all musical gastronomes!

All proceeds will be donated to The Churches Conservation Trust and you are invited to join the musicians afterwards for tea and homemade cake, included in the admission price!

Musical Banquet's vibrant and energetic performances have delighted critics and audiences alike:
