Heritage Open Days - Stanstead Abbotts
Heritage Open Days is England's largest festival of history and culture. Places across the country throw open their doors to celebrate their heritage, community and history. It’s your chance to see hidden places and try out new experiences – and it’s all FREE.
St James' has been a landmark for seven centuries. Built on a hillside above the River Lea, its embattled buttressed tower was a steering point for those on the water and a waymark for those on the ancient route to London. The church's unspoiled interior has hardly been touched since Georgian times and features unusually high box pews and a three-decker pulpit.
Visitors will also enjoy an art exhibition set up by the local primary school on the theme of the Heritage Open Days for 2018, "Extraordinary Women".
A celebration of the lives of some of the women who have worshipped at St James's over the centuries. In doing the research on one of the women, has surprised us to find out how much she is still remembered after nearly 500 years! Come and find out who!
