St. James' Church opens its doors for Heritage Open Day, celebrating the 2018 theme of 'Extraordinary Women'

St James' has been a landmark for seven centuries. Built on a hillside above the River Lea, its embattled buttressed tower was a steering point for those on the water and a waymark for those on the ancient route to London. The church's unspoiled interior has hardly been touched since Georgian times and features unusually high box pews and a three-decker pulpit.

Visitors will also enjoy an art exhibition set up by the local primary school on the theme of the Heritage Open Days for 2018, "Extraordinary Women".

A celebration of the lives of some of the women who have worshipped at St James's over the centuries. In doing the research on one of the women, has surprised us to find out how much she is still remembered after nearly 500 years! Come and find out who!
