Historic Church Tour 2023: Gems of Hampshire
Experience spectacular craftsmanship and striking interiors on this tour around Hampshire.
Our first stop will be the magnificent Winchester Cathedral, a gothic masterpiece in the heart of what was once the seat of Anglo-Saxon and Norman royal power. The cathedral is among the largest of its kind in Northern Europe
Next, we will visit St Mary’s Church, Itchen Stoke. A colourful Victorian jewel of a church whose design was inspired by the chapel of French kings in Paris. The church overwhelms the senses - it is a truly exhilarating building, tall and imposing, especially as you approach it up a steep path from the road
Lastly, we will explore St Mary’s Church, Ashley Following recent research into the medieval graffiti at this church, learn more about our discoveries of this 12th-century church. Set prettily amongst trees, was probably built to serve Gains Castle, a Norman fortification now vanished.
Travel: Depart Winchester train station at 10:30, returning to the station by 16:30.
