West Midlands philanthropist, John Osborn CBE, brings musicians from City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra to Shrewsbury to raise funds for the Churches Conservation Trust’s restoration of St. Mary’s Church this winter in a chamber concert not to be missed.

CBSO string players will perform Brahms’ Sextet in G Major on Thursday December 2nd from 6-8pm. Tickets include wine and a local cheese and charcuterie platter by Shrewsbury indoor market residents, Iron & Rose, who will be pairing wine with the repertoire for the evening.

Both the CBSO and St. Mary’s Church are close to John’s heart. John is one of the CBSO’s major donors and is also responsible for boosting the campaign to restore and save the internationally important stained-glass collection at St. Mary’s which has sadly seen extensive damage due to anti-social behaviour. John has pledged to match any new donations pound for pound up to a value of £50,000 to go towards the stained-glass restoration costs.

Commenting on this fundraising concert John said, ‘It will be a great pleasure to hear CBSO musicians, some of the best in the world, perform at St. Mary’s. I look forward to sharing the exceptional musicianship of the CBSO with the people of Shrewsbury and Shropshire, whilst raising funds to ensure the future of St. Mary’s.’

The Churches Conservation Trust’s Judith Patrick, Head of North Region, comments, ‘Vital repair and conservation work is needed to repair and restore the ancient stained glass. We are so grateful to John for his generous pledge, and to the CBSO for coming to perform and supporting our fundraising efforts which will allow us to continue our work so that the church can remain open for people to enjoy.’

CBSO Viola, David BaMaung, who coordinates the CBSO’s Chamber Music Programme said, ‘We are delighted to present this beautiful piece to you in such a unique venue. We look forward to seeing you and raising funds for this very special church.’

Commenting on the evening, Robin Nugent of Iron & Rose added, ‘Great music, good food and a glass (or two!) of delicious wine. What can beat it? Music is in our DNA so we are massively excited to be involved in this chamber concert to raise funds for St. Mary’s which is so special to our town.’

Tickets are £15 per person, to include wine/a non-alcoholic drink option and a cheese and charcuterie platter. Ticket proceeds will go towards the Campaign to Save St. Mary’s. Any additional gifts on the evening will be matched by John’s generous pledge.
