Quotes

"What I love about audio drama is its inherent capacity for captivating storytelling. There's an intimacy unmatched by any other medium, often placing us directly in the mind and thought process of our protagonists.

There's storytelling power and potential in the unseen. For that comedic "they were behind me all along, weren't they?" moment, or that horrifying grotesque face of the monster you conjure in your own head.

Much like books, the lack of visuals asks its listeners to come up with their own worlds; so no two people's vivid conjurings are the same. It can transport you to worlds at a fraction of the cost of a film production crew.

All of that is why audio drama is such a fantastic medium for writers to test out their creative ideas. Which is exactly what we wanted to achieve with Summer Stories.

"Inspired loosely by Holy Trinity, the five participants of Summer Stories came armed with their own ideas; ranging from distraught domestic situations to absurd explorations of the human psyche.

And together, over a series of ideas sharing and script writing workshops, I supported them in developing their worlds and stories, their characters and their voices.

"I was thrilled to offer this opportunity as part of Summer Stories - for writers and writing newbies alike to try out writing in a new medium, from idea to conception, and to guide them through that process.
Mostly for me, the Listening Party will be a chance to see first-hand how our participants react to their audio dramas, complete with music and sound mixing.

And, of course, to share those dramas with the wider Seventeen Nineteen community. It means a lot to me that I can support and facilitate others' creativity.

Jay Sykes- Jay is currently working with Seventeen Nineteen's Lily Daniels and Newcastle based production company Sister Sounds on a drama for BBC Radio 4, inspired by a true story, 'William's Castle'.

‘The spoken word is how all civilisations started telling stories. It was a great experience to go back to that process of just telling stories through the spoken word.

Running the project in the Seventeen19 was wonderful, it has such a fabulous atmosphere and the building is soaked through with stories of its own.

I can’t wait to hear the final product of our work, to learn whether what we meant to say is what an audience actually hears.
