One of our Heritage Detective volunteers is ready and excited to get stuck in to a new project.

In 2021 Emma Raine worked with illustrator Andy Waugh to develop a digital walking tour of Sunderland focussing on the mundane and everyday newspaper headlines of the past, Extra Ordinary Sunderland shone a light on relatable figures in Sunderland Echo headlines, figures like Arthur Crowe- who suffered a compound fracture while leaving an office and remarkably made news for the incident.

After taking 2022 to focus on other projects Emma is keen to get back to working on the history of Sunderland:

I guess I’m hoping that it will ignite people’s interest in the area. It’s all very well having a museum about Sunderland on your doorstep but often, people don’t look up and out at what’s around them and don’t visit places that are nearby. Often, museums can be impersonal too, holding admittedly fascinating artefacts about history, but usually in general terms, without a personal touch. Which is no one’s fault, there’s only so much information you can display in a museum. The Pop-Up Museum is designed to counteract this. The subject matter will be selected by the public, on a topic that they want to know more about, and because it is there for a limited time, people are encouraged to come and see it before it disappears and won’t be tempted to put off a visit in the knowledge that it will always be there.

To kick us off we're asking for suggestions of what stories to feature in the exhibition. Let us know:
