Tower Tours at St Michael & All Angels, Princetown
Church of St Michael & All Angels, Princetown

This June enjoy a tour inside the tower of St Michael and All Angels Church in Princetown. The church sits on top of Dartmoor and has a fascinating history. It was built in 1812 by American and French prisoners of war when they were held captive at Dartmoor prison. Enjoy views of the surrounding countryside (weather permitting!) from a different perspective and find out more about the history of the church.
Work was carried out by the CCT in April 2024 to clean and limewash the tower. This tower tour is aimed at giving people the opportunity to see a normally locked space and to find out more about this unique building, the only church in England to be built by prisoners of war.
Refreshments (tea, coffee and cake) will be available by donation.
We want everyone to be safe and enjoy the tour so please note the following:
- The tower tours will take visitors up the inside of the tower, looking out at the churchyard, nave and views and not out onto the roof, as it is unsafe.
- This tour is only suitable for those over 11 due to the heights of barriers.
- The tours are not bookable so just turn up and we’ll take people up in groups.
- The tour involves climbing a spiral staircase. The staircase has a handrail but is open so not suitable for those uncomfortable with heights.
