Graveyard Shift

St Martin's Church, Exeter - detailed stone carvings

Come along to a free exhibition at St Martins as part of Art Week Exeter. ‘Graveyard Shift’ is a body of work made in response to a year spent as guest artist in a church graveyard on the outskirts of Redruth in Cornwall.
Artist and printmaker Caroline Wilkins walked there every day, first spending time reading and responding to Roland Barthes ‘Mourning Diary, then making a rubbing of a gravestone whilst always stopping to talk to people visiting the graveyard.
This daily pilgrimage generated a body of work that includes a sound piece, textiles, drawings and print. The exhibition at St Martins is a new iteration created for the space.
About the artist:
Caroline Wilkins is a printmaker and artist who works with repetition to create large-scale installations. Her work has been described as ‘gently subversive’ and is informed by an earlier career working at the margins of art education, with students excluded from school.
This has defined her work with a distinct politic, one that critically questions our modern condition and contemporary society In both her work for exhibitions and her workshop practice Caroline creates space for conversation as she invites the viewer to interact, contribute and discuss their response to the themes being explored.
Free exhibition as part of Art Week Exeter.
