The majority of today’s survivals of Royal Arms are Georgian and Victorian, but we are lucky enough to hold precious examples from as early as the 12th - early 13th century.

However; it was not until the second half of the 20th century that their significance came to be appreciated for their historical and artistic qualities and as isolated survivors of once-ubiquitous heraldic paintings.

Easel painting conservator, Sally Woodcock, takes us through the challenges she has to face and treatments she carries out in order to ensure their survival and preservation.
