The 80th anniversary of Victory over Japan (VJ Day 80) takes place on Friday 15 August 2025, marking the end of the Second World War. Alongside a plethora of other events across Britain, the Department of Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) are asking all iconic buildings and landmarks to commemorate this momentous occasion, by illuminating their facades from 21:00 on Friday 15th August.

While VE Day 1945, marked the end of the Second World War in Europe, thousands of British, Commonwealth and allied troops continued to battle against Japanese forces in Asia and the Pacific. Victory over Japan (VJ Day) was declared on 15th August marking the end of the Second World War, a day that represents the resilience, sacrifices, and courage of those who fought for our freedom. It is a day of immense historical significance, and DCMS believe it is crucial that this anniversary is honoured in a visible and meaningful way.

How can your building 'light up' and get involved?

Many government buildings will be lighting up to mark this occasion, and they would be honoured if your building could join this collective effort. Suggestions include:

  • White Lighting: Illuminate your building in white light
  • Searchlights or Light Beams: Use of searchlights or V-shaped beams, in reference to the famous ‘V for Victory’ sign
  • VE/VJ 80 Logo Projections: Where technically possible, we encourage projecting the official VE/VJ 80 logo onto buildings or landmarks. The logo can be found by accessing our toolkit here.

Please contact vevjday80@dcms.gov.uk directly to confirm if you would like to 'light up' your building for this period, and if you have further questions about the VJ 80 events and engagement programme.

Your involvement will help make this moment of remembrance even more impactful for the entire community. Once confirmed, we will then look to feature this on the official VE/VJ Day website, https://ve-vjday80.gov.uk/ , showcasing your contribution to this important national remembrance.
