A striking new exhibition transforming the remnants of war into symbols of hope will be hosted at St Edmund’s Church, Rochdale this May.

“Icons on Ammo Boxes: From War to Hope” is an internationally recognised art project that repurposes ammunition boxes from the front lines of Ukraine into sacred icons. The exhibition will be presented at St Edmund’s Church, which is cared for by CCT and The Friends of St Edmund’s, demonstrating the powerful role historic churches can play as spaces for reflection, resilience, and contemporary culture.

The Friends of St Edmund’s have helped deliver over £1.5 million worth of essential medical aid to Ukraine. This includes a portable MRI scanner, hospital beds and critical medical supplies, sourced from NHS and private clinics across the North of England and Scotland and sent to hospitals serving communities affected by the conflict.

The exhibition offers a compelling story of how materials once used for destruction can be transformed into objects of faith and hope, while also highlighting the generosity and determination of volunteers working locally to support people internationally.

Howard Bowden, Chair of The Friends of St Edmund’s, said:

“This project has been incredibly important to The Friends of St Edmund’s. Bringing the community together for such a tremendous effort has been a truly rewarding experience and something very close to our hearts. Being able to help collect and send vital medical aid and supplies to those in need is something we are immensely proud of.”

St Edmund’s Church continues to be a vibrant example of how historic churches in CCT’s care can support modern social, cultural and humanitarian causes, remaining relevant and active at the heart of their communities.

The exhibition will be showing from May 11th to May 25th, 11AM - 6PM.
