On Saturday 2nd May, the public and special guests are invited to a special open day which aims to celebrate the reopening of a rare and remarkable tiled labyrinth at St Mary’s Church, Itchen Stoke. The labyrinth, which dates back to 1867, is a scale replica of the famous labyrinth at Chartres Cathedral in northern France, and for many it is a symbol of enormous spiritual significance.
Between 10am-12pm visitors are invited to undertake silent walking and reflection in a calm and quiet atmosphere. For those who want to discover more, there will be a fascinating Local History and Labyrinth Talk at midday. During the afternoon session, which takes place between 1pm-4pm, visitors can to walk the labyrinth to a backdrop of gentle music, and there will also be fun heritage activities for children enjoy.
Local Community Officer, Victoria Green comments:
"Whether you come to walk, pause or marvel over the details, ultimately it is your support that helps us care for the labyrinth and church. Support can come in a variety of different ways, from donations to our wall safe or website, undertaking fundraising events on our behalf, or even enquiries from local groups and businesses looking to book the space for private walks. We are also eager to hear from volunteers whom would love to become 'Labyrinth Guardians', assisting us to keep both the labyrinth and church clean and safe for all to enjoy."
Victoria would also love to hear from local schools, colleges and universities who are looking for a unique and inspiring setting that can provide the chance explore the history, mathematics and architecture engraved into the very foundations of the building and labyrinth.
For those attending the open day please note; there are no toilets on site, no running water available and no electricity. Parking is very limited so please car share or walk if you can. For those who do arrive by car, parking is suggested at the bottom of Water Lane/near the river path. There must be no muddy boots on the labyrinth. Obedient dogs on lead welcome in church - but not on labyrinth tiles.
