A new roof for St Bartholomew’s, Lower Basildon

CCT is delighted that St Bartholomew’s in Lower Basildon has a new nave roof following a successful Raise the Roof campaign, which was launched Summer 2024.

The fundraising campaign aimed to secure funds to replace St Bartholomew’s nave roof after the roof tiles slipped in 2022, and it was discovered that the wooden battens underneath had rotted, risking the interior of the church. £148,000 was raised in total and Oxfordshire based Everest Roofing will complete the works in time for Christmas.

CCT partnered with a Local Fundraising Campaign Board, which worked tirelessly to promote the project and raised funds from multiple sources including the Parish Council, West Berkshire Council’s Community Infrastructure Levy, the Englefield Charitable Trust, the PF Charitable Trust, and the Benefact Trust. Events included a dazzling black-tie extravaganza which raised over £20,000 and many individuals gave generously.  The project will also benefit from the Listed Places of Worship grant scheme which enables VAT to be claimed back on conservation work, which ends in March 2026.

Alison Laing who chaired the Fundraising Board spoke about the project.
