Lifelong Learning

We offer a range of activities to suit people of different ages, interest areas and abilities. Alternatively, we can help you organise your own.

Lifelong Learning activities

We believe everyone should have an opportunity to connect with local history and culture: heritage for all. Our historic churches are open to everyone.

Our expert team organises 'hands-on' activities to suit all ages and areas of interest in historic churches across the country.  These lifelong learning opportunities are usually free, require no previous experience and give people the opportunity to try practising different crafts, learn new skills and gain a deeper understanding of a particular subject.  They are also a great way to socialise and to connect with other people in the community.

These events are open to all, but advanced booking may be required.

Paid courses and tours

Each year we also offer a selection of paid tours, lectures and courses. From a two day excursion taking in the church where Shakespeare is said to have married Anne Hathaway, 400 years after the Bard's death, to day trips and walking tours around the country, there is something to suit everyone.

Discovering Hidden Somerset: public archaeology at Uphill

Local children, young people and adults joined Time Team’s Phil Harding and CCT experts during a week-long exploration of subterranean treasures in a series of archaeological, surveying and learning activities at the fabulous coastal ruin of St Nicholas, Uphill, Somerset.

The group mapped the church and churchyard using a variety of modern archaeological surveying techniques and excavated the interior of the partially roofless church.

A vital component of Discovering Hidden Somerset is offering free training and learning opportunities to the public, who enthusiastically participated in this ‘hands-on’ investigation into the past. As a result, we welcomed over 500 visitors to this remote church throughout the week.

This project is just one of many CCT initiatives across the country that aims to inspire people to enjoy and learn about our fine historic buildings filled with stories of England’s inhabitants in centuries past.

Discovering Hidden Somerset is funded by a legacy and the Heritage Lottery Fund.
