Open Day and Guided Tour - Newcastle
Explore the history of one of Newcastle's most notable churches.
St James' Church and graveyard in Benwell will be open to visitors between 10am and 4pm on Tuesday 24th July, with volunteers on hand to welcome visitors, answer questions about the history of the site - which was designed by notable local architect John Dobson - and to give a free guided tour at 1pm.
There will be exhibitions and publications available to view, as well as stained glass by William Wailes, an engraving by Eric Gill and carvings by Ralph Hedley. Many notable local figures are buried in the historic graveyard, including the 19th-century developer Richard Grainger and artist and glass manufacturer John George Sowerby.
No booking required.
