Thomas Hardy country

A poignant place in the heart of Dorset for Thomas Hardy...

The English poet William Barnes was rector of St Peter's Church at Winterborne Came in Dorset from 1862 to 1886, also preaching at neighbouring Whitcombe Church.

Barnes' great friend Thomas Hardy lived just across the fields at Max Gate and wrote his poem The Last Signal about his walk to Winterborne Came church on the day of Barnes' funeral.
