Heating St Mary's Church, Shrewsbury
Shrewsbury's St Mary the Virgin is one of our most popular churches. Located in the centre of this historic and attractive Shropshire town, it serves as a much loved community building and provides a great day out for local visitors, schools and tourists. People tell us they love the serenity of the church; its stunning stained glass; the concerts and events; the friendly cafe and the wonderful sense of history....but they're also really, really cold!
The heating has failed at St Mary’s, and this is having a decidedly detrimental effect on our visitors and volunteers, as well as those who hire the church for events or visit the cafe. The frosty temperature, which is starting to be felt even more keenly now that we're into autumn, doesn't encourage people to hang around for long, and people are sadly missing out on all that this beautiful building has to offer!
We're therefore trying to raise funds to combat the cold, by installing a new boiler. We'd also like to add some new lighting, to better enhance the beauty of the building! To get St Mary's glowing before the winter will cost us £53,342. We have already secured £44,402 and are really grateful to the Veolia Environmental Trust, the Millichope Foundation and the church's wonderful group of stewards for their grant support. We now need to raise the final £8,940....please will you help us?
