Schools resources

The Trust has produced a range of free downloadable resources for teachers to use in the classroom. These materials aim to support teachers in using our churches as an exciting resource for learning outside the classroom. They offer ideas and suggestions for developing educational programmes across the curriculum.

Visiting a church can cover a range of subjects and ages across the National Curriculum. The following guidance notes are provided to help teachers make specific links and get the most out of visiting a church:

Schemes of work for Art, History and RE

Featuring St. Mary the Virgin, Shrewsbury and St. Andrew, Wroxeter, these materials offer support in preparing activities around three main curriculum subjects and can be adapted for use in any church. The units can be adjusted to better fit either the age or ability level of the particular classes you will be taking, or to incorporate ideas from each of the three named or other additional areas.

The planning for each of the units is based on the QCA model to ensure a common format. The materials cover Key Stages 1 and 2, providing opportunities to:

  • Develop the use of site visits to enliven the curriculum
  • Look at worked examples of good practice that could be used or adapted to fit your own circumstances
  • Explore issues surrounding the use of redundant churches

Information for Teachers

The Trust has also developed a series of free information booklets on selected churches in association with English Heritage. Each booklet contains historical information, a description of the church, and ideas for educational approaches linked to the National Curriculum. Discussion topics exploring issues surrounding redundant churches are also available.

The booklets can be downloaded free and are also available in printed form. If you wish to obtain your free copy, please contact our London office on 020 7213 0660 or write to:
