Churches are at the heart of England’s cultural identity. They contain our history and collective memory and have witnessed the rites of passage of peoples’ lives – ours and our ancestors. But in today’s society, as our everyday lives change, many churches are needing to adapt and change too. Some require small changes to encourage more community use and local involvement; others require serious interventions for a major new use. How can we ensure such changes are sensitive to the church and its past, yet sustainable for the future?

The day, which will take place at The Garden Museum, is designed to share experience, ideas and good practice for anyone who cares for an historic church and will explore:

  • contemporary design interventions in the interior of historic churches;
  • what makes a church adaptation successful, whether in continuing worship or being converted to new and secular uses;

The Garden Museum is housed in the deconsecrated church of St Mary’s, Lambeth. The Museum was set up to save the medieval and Victorian structure from demolition and in 2008 its interior was rebuilt as a centre for exhibitions and events. The contemporary and dramatic design was by Dow Jones Architects.
