Making a Difference

Appreciating the historic environment has a crucial part to play in understanding our communities, shared history and cultural identity.

Often the church is the oldest, largest and most architecturally significant building in the area, holding a symbolic role in the life of the community and representing much that is good about the vital social glue that adds to the quality of life for local people.

Continuing that tradition, we work hard to ensure that the historic churches in our care can continue to play a part in the lives of local people and communities, fostering a sense of belonging and pride and adding to the quality of life.

Here are some of the ways we try to achieve this aim:

Conservation

Protection of the buildings themselves will not only allow communities to continue to use them but also ensure protection of the history and stories connected to them.

Re-use

Even when a church is no longer required for regular worship is can still be very valuable as a community resource.  Re-use can help to re-ignite the interest in an area, raise its profile and go some way to encouraging re-investment and regeneration.

Tourism

By encouraging people to visit and understand the churches in an area we can offer a unique visitor attraction while helping to support the local economy.

Learning

As people learn more about the history of the church, its history and those connected with it, we hope they will further understand its value and significance.  We are committed to making our churches accessible to all.

Events

We are pleased that our churches are used for a wide variety of events – from local art displays and school plays to professional musical performances and theatre productions.  When used as a venue space, more people have the opportunity to enjoy our churches and the wonderful experience they offer.
