West Dean, Salisbury
This fascinating chantry chapel, built about 1333 by Robert de Borbach, is all that remains of the 14th century parish church, demolished and replaced in 1868. Restored as a mortuary chapel, a splendid series of Evelyn family and other monuments were moved into it. Most remarkable are two from the 17th century, one to John Evelyn and the other a large composition, probably by John Bushnell, to Robert Pierrepoint. The 19th century restoration was undertaken by William J Evelyn, a descendant of John Evelyn, the 17th/18th century author and diarist and one of the Evelyns commemorated here.
