St Giles, Imber
Standing in rolling downland deep inside the military training area of Salisbury Plain, this 13th-century church is the only building remaining intact in the village evacuated in 1943. The distinctive 14th-century tower has five pinnacles. The chancel was rebuilt in 1895. The interior, divested of its fittings, allows the visitor to appreciate the architecture and atmosphere. There are remains of medieval paintings, and a set of 17th-century bell ringing changes painted on the north wall of the tower. The sloping churchyard contains fine 17th- and 18th-century tomb chests.
Please note: because of intense military training on Salisbury Plain in preparation for deployments to Afghanistan, the MOD and the CCT regret that the Plain, and therefore Imber church, will not be open to the public for Easter 2010.
