Join us and Dr Matthew Green for our Annual Lecture at the historic St Margaret's Church in Westminster.

“Drowned. Buried by sand. Decimated by plague. Plunged off a cliff. This is the forgotten history of Britain's lost cities, ghost towns and vanished villages: our shadowlands.”

Join Historian Doctor Matthew Green as he tells the extraordinary story of Britain’s ‘Shadowlands’, exploring how these places met their fate, and probes the disappearances to explain why Britain looks the way it does today, weaving in the stories of some of the churches in the care of Churches Conservation Trust.

Dr Matthew Green is a historian, writer, and broadcaster with a doctorate in Modern History from the University of Oxford. He has appeared in documentaries on the BBC, ITV and Channel 4 and is the founder of Unreal City Audio – which produces immersive tours of London. Matthew is the author of London: A Travel Guide Through Time and Shadowlands: A Journey Through Lost Britain which are both available to purchase at cctstore.org.uk.

St Margaret’s, known as ‘the Church on Parliament Square’ or ‘the parish church of the House of Commons’ provides a stunning venue for our 2023 Annual Lecture. Following an insight into the stories of our Shadowlands and some of the churches in the care of the Trust, the audience will have a chance to ask Matthew their questions from the pews of this historic church and enjoy a glass of wine during a drinks reception following the lecture, included in the ticket price.

Doors open from 19:15, with the lecture starting at 19:30. Tickets are available to purchase from just £19.50, with CCT members enjoying an exclusive discounted rate of £17.50. Included in the cost of the tickets is the post-lecture wine reception.

Proceeds from this event will support our vital work caring for 357 historic churches throughout England.

Our Annual Lecture is held each year in celebration of the life and work of the late Candida Lycett Green, a passionate champion of historic English churches and former Vice President of the Churches Conservation Trust.
