A tiny church with ancient origins

Prettily set in hilly country, this tiny church has Norman origins although the shape of the churchyard, and its prominent position suggest an earlier foundation.

The nave, font and south doorway are 12th-century and the double bell-cote is 13th. In the churchyard are early 19th-century table tombs to Richard Payne Knight and his brother Thomas.

Both were born nearby and, in different ways, each made their mark on the wider world: Richard was an archaeologist, architect and writer, while Thomas was an expert fruit grower who developed new varieties of apples.

This church is also part of our Five Churches Trail, which takes you on a wonderful journey around the rural heartland of Herefordshire.

This is a sweet little church with a real feeling of prayerfulness within its walls.
During Holy Week this year (2013) we held compline there by candlelight. It was a beautiful, simple, quiet service with about 14 people present on one of the coldest evenings in the run up to Easter.
This Sunday, 28th April, we are holding a Lambing Service there with lambs from the surrounding farm coming along to the church. The rural setting for this church is perfect for an agricultural service of this nature. If you'd like to join us, do wrap up warmly as there is no heating!

In its simplicity and setting this is a must see. One of the nearby residents were helpful with our parking.

Keyholder

If the access information for this church is listed as 'Keyholder nearby', this means that the key is kept by one of our invaluable volunteer 'keyholders', who usually live just a short walk from the church and can give visitors the key; sometimes this is a nearby hotel, pub, library, art gallery or other venue. You will find instructions explaining how to get the key when you arrive at the church.

Disabled access

Access through a gate across rough grass path.

Facilities

Due to the historic nature of our buildings, only a very small number of them have heating or running water meaning that they can be cold, and very rarely have toilet facilities. The lighting is usually operated via a 'push button' timer or a motion sensor. We do apologise for any inconvenience the lack of facilities may cause.
