Few churches can compare with the stunning setting of Coverham, lying low in the valley of the River Cover in the Dales and offering a haven for walkers and many other visitors.
This handsome stone church has a large churchyard - it was an early Christian site and nearby are the few remains of Coverham Abbey.
The building is of 13th-century origin and has a calm, light interior. There have been 14th and 17th century additions and the tower is 16th century. There was also much Victorian rebuilding and most fittings date from that period.
There are interesting monuments and tombs in the churchyard.

If the access information for this church is listed as 'Keyholder nearby', this means that the key is kept by one of our invaluable volunteer 'keyholders', who usually live just a short walk from the church and can give visitors the key; sometimes this is a nearby hotel, pub, library, art gallery or other venue. You will find instructions explaining how to get the key when you arrive at the church.
There is one step into the church.
Due to the historic nature of our buildings, only a very small number of them have heating or running water meaning that they can be cold, and very rarely have toilet facilities. The lighting is usually operated via a 'push button' timer or a motion sensor. We do apologise for any inconvenience the lack of facilities may cause.
This church is in an idyllic setting. Sheep graze amidst the fascinating headstones in the churchyard. The interior is graced with Victorian tiles. A simple church made special by its surroundings and tranquil ambience
I was the officer at the Church Commissioners in 1985/86 that completed the closure of this church ready for its transfer to the (then) Redundant Churches Fund. I hope to visit one day.
