- Stansted Mountfitchet, Essex (Church of St Mary the Virgin)
This medieval church, with parts dating from the 1100s, has a bold brick tower and stands next to the grounds of Stansted Hall in a peaceful setting despite the nearby motorway and airport.
It contains two exceptional 17th-century tomb figures – wasp-waisted Hester Salusbury in her hunting clothes and her father, Sir Thomas Middleton.

3 miles north east of Bishop’s Stortford off B1383; follow signs to 'Norman Castle and The House on the Hill Toy Museum' in village centre and then keep right on Church Road; after 0.8 miles you pass the school on your right, church shortly afterwards down lane on your left
