The legendary Black Dog terrified 16th-century parishioners when it tore through Bungay, leaving people in the church dead.

Today however, St Mary’s with its landmark tower sits peacefully in the centre of the town, open for visitors to quietly savour its wonderful roof carvings.

Bungay is a typical Suffolk town with street markets throughout the year and the main road, Earsham Street, has many independent antiques and specialist shops as well as art galleries with regularly changing exhibitions. Bungay also boasts a Norman castle with its own visitor centre and café.

There are plenty of tea rooms and ancient hostelries when you need to refuel! If you have time, a few miles out of town will take you to St Peter’s Hall and Brewery which makes for a fascinating visit.

All Saints' Church at Ellough is on the road to Beccles and this 14th-century church has a fabulous collection of brasses.

Beccles itself, is a much visited Suffolk town with many specialist shops for those who love a browse.

Then a little further coastwards you could not miss a visit to Ruined but beautiful exterior of St Andrew's Church, Covehithe, Suffolkthe marvellous Medieval ruin of St Andrew's Church, Covehithe.

Your day could very nicely finish in the coastal town of Southwold – famous for its iconic lighthouse, and the Adnams Brewery. Here there are a variety of places to eat and drink - from afternoon tea to a fish and chip supper to a fine dining meal at the town’s famous Swan Hotel.
