A door to the past

Conserving of one of England's oldest oak doors at St Mary's Church, Little Hormead

In 2010, we completed the first phase of conservation to one of England’s oldest oak doors at a cost of approximately £40,000.

Although the door is in a safer condition, we need to complete the job so we can display it for all to see.

For this, we need to raise around £6,000. The works will have to take place in warmer weather.

Once funds have been raised and permission granted, we will:

  • Remove modern cement additions from the stone threshold below the door
  • Re-mount the door through its Victorian timber bracing to a steel support
  • Provide a hinged sub-frame to give future access for inspection and repair
  • Protect the door with toughened glass and front curtain showing its overall design
  • Conservator at work on the door at St Mary the Virgin, Little HormeadInstall an interpretation board next to the door explaining the work we have done

This work is important for the future protection of the door and we need your help in succeeding. Keep checking back for updates.

Last year, we welcomed over two million visitors to our churches. If each person donated just £2, this would enable us to keep our churches open, safe and watertight for you and future generations to enjoy.
