Adaptations & alterations

The art of balancing the old with the new

New kitchen at St Cyriac & St JulittaWe are committed to maintaining the highest standards of work on all sizes of projects - aiming for a conservation success as well as providing a sustainable building to inspire local communities and visitors.

A building that is unused deteriorates faster, wastes a valuable heritage asset, encourages vandalism and lacks a feeling of life.

New and increased use can contribute towards not only a sustainable building, but a thriving community.

Not all churches can be adapted - some would be greatly harmed in doing so. However, for others, alterations are acceptable so long as they can be justified. We do this by looking at what is significant about the church, the site and its fixtures and fittings (chattels) - then we look at how the changes would impact on all these. All alterations to our churches require listed building consent.

  • Changes should be reversible if at all possible
  • New work should enhance, rather than reduce, the significance of the building, even if hidden
  • High standards of design, materials and workmanship are adopted for new work
  • Record fabric before changes are made - for historical documentation
  • Develop policies on frequently asked for additions, such as new headstones, memorials, artwork and heating
  • Retain a level of sanctity proportionate with the level of use, but always providing a small space for ongoing worship
